GUNTHER SCHULLER, waltomista, kompozytor i muzykolog.

Although the most representative for cool are recordings by small jazz groups (CD-14), the most fertile soil for cool-related ideas and means were orchestras of various kinds and sizes, up to the full symphony one. The reason is quite obvious. The more instruments in the band, the greater is temptation for the arranger-composer to try new ideas. The evolution of some jazz orchestras in the Forties and 'Fifties, steering away from the swing band formula, made them ideal tools for the approaches similar to the European ones. However, not willing to resign from attractive jazz elements, the experimenters tried to reconcile them with the rich realm of means and esthetics of the modern "serious" music. The tendency itself was not new, to name only Paul Whiteman and George Gershwin, but it was introduced officially and formulated in the 'Fifties under the name THIRD STREAM by GUNTHER SCHULLER (b.1925), composer, musicologist and French horn player. His principal ally in that field became the well known leader of the Modern Jazz Quartet, John Lewis (CD-14) and they were joined very soon, after they managed to constitute their Orchestra U.S.A., by the outstanding composers: George Russell, Hal Overton, Bill Russo, Teo Macero, Pete Rugolo, Don Sebesky and, sporadically, by Benny Golson, Charles Mingus, J.J.Johnson and Michel Legrand.

They turned to such European forms like suite, concerto, concertino, the symphonic poem or program pieces. The Third Stream ideas found their exponents in Europe too (Rolf Liebermann in Switzerland). In Poland the best composers of Third Stream music were Andrzej Trzaskowski and Adam Sławiński.
