Niemal równoczesnie bliźniaczą gałęzią stał się rock'n'roll, zapoczątkowany przebojem "Rock Around The Clock" białego wokalisty i gitarzysty Billa Haleya.

The Beatles łączyli swobodnie elementy harmoniki bluesa z zaawansowanymi progresjami i modalizmami, rozszerzając pole ekspresji i brzmienia w sposób atrakcyjny i wyznaczając tym kurs własciwego, ostrzejszego rocka. Czołówkę w tym czasie stanowiły grupy angielskie. Również pierwsze próby łączenia rocka z jazzową improwizacją dotyczyły swietnych i ambitnych grup brytyjskich, The Cream (E. Clapton, Jack Bruce i G. Baker) oraz Soft Machine. Próby takie podjęli też w Stanach gitarzysta Larry Coryell i wibrafonista Gary Burton.

In the middle of the Fifties the blues gave birth to something more dynamic, that was named rhythm-and-blues. Its early exponent, MUDDY WATERS from Mississippi, was soon followed by B.B.King and Chuck Berry. Almost at the same time similar blues outgrowth, introduced by white guitarist-vocalist BILL HALEY'S "Rock Around The Clock", became known as rock'n'roll. Both styles presented practically the same way of playing rolling basses, riffs, plus singing. They immediately found they followers among American and British youngsters, enthralled by Haley, Berry and Elvis Presley.

There was also black soul music stemming from gospels and blues, but additionally gaining carnal and erotic meanings. It started, as we know with Ray Charles (CD-16) and was intensified by James Brown, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. The importance of electric guitar kept growing and finally it became the main instrument of popular music in the '60-s, its unexpected possibilities shown by Jimi Hendrix. The average rock'n'roll group included two guitars (lead and rhythm), bass guitar and drums.

Contrary to jazz, the vocal participation was undisputed. At the beginning of the '60-s rock'n'roll softened a bit. There were ballads and other lyrical pieces and in Britain skiffle appeared, derived from folk music but drawing also from blues nad jazz. It was the background from which The Beatles' music grew, combining simple blues harmony with advanced progression and modalisms, considerably broadening the field of expression and sound, thus showing the way for authentic, sharp rock groups like The Rolling Stones. Then, the first attempt to combine rock with jazz improvisation was successfully accomplished in 1966 by the extraordinary British groups, The Cream and The Soft Machine. In the States guitarist Larry Coryell and vibist Gary Burton also explored the ways of merging jazz with rock, but the satisfying results belonged to two bands: Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Chase. B.S and T. besides ingenius ideas had three improvising jazzmen among the players (R.Brecker, F.Lipsius, D.Halligan). Bill Chase lifted four trumpets from Woody Herman's Orchestra and joined them up with the rock rhythm section. Chase's growing success was broken in 1974, by his tragic death in an airplane crash.

The idea of jazz-rock fusion seemed salutary in view of shrinking jazz audiences, and so, many eminent jazzmen, Miles Davis included, decided "to go electric" and embrace rock.

Although many others remained in the mainstream, the dominant style of the Seventies became jazz-rock. The stars of that decade were Wayne Shorter, Js Zawinul, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and many others.
